A youth named Bapi Adhikari died after being allegedly beaten by his friend’s father in Behala’s Sakherbazar area of Kolkata on Sunday morning. The incident occurred around 7 am near the Sakherbazar Market Complex. According to police sources, the incident followed a night of alcohol consumption involving four friends. During the altercation, one of them called his father, who then allegedly assaulted Bapi in public.
Preliminary investigations reveal that Bapi and his three friends were out on the road from around 11 pm on Saturday night. All four reportedly consumed alcohol throughout the night. On Sunday morning, a quarrel broke out among them near the market complex, during which three of the friends allegedly slapped one youth. That youth then called his father to the location.
Upon arrival, the father and his son allegedly began beating Bapi Adhikari on the road in full public view. Locals claimed that Bapi was punched, kicked, and slapped repeatedly. Despite attempts to escape, he was reportedly dragged inside the market and further assaulted. Police sources confirmed that Bapi sustained serious injuries and was taken to Vidyasagar State General Hospital, where he was declared dead.
Officers of the Kolkata Police Scientific Wing visited the spot and collected forensic samples as part of the investigation. Multiple CCTV cameras installed in and around the market area have been identified, and their footage has been seized for examination. A team of officers is reviewing the video evidence to establish the sequence of events.
Local shopkeepers reported seeing an unconscious youth lying on the road when they arrived to open their stores. Several people present at the scene said, “Oke tolo, mone hoy more gechhe (Lift him, looks like he is dead).” It is also alleged that two other youths were beaten during the incident. Police are continuing with the investigation, and statements from eyewitnesses and those involved are being recorded.
